I did both of these stops in one post because they were mostly spent doing school and work with just a few touristy things thrown in. We've hit the portion of our trip where we are just trying to get to Tucson on time, so some longer drives and less scenery on the way.
On Sunday we took a longer drive to Oklahoma City. The campground was ok, but pretty plain for a KOA. There was a little playground, but that was about it. There was also a "campground cat" named Smokey that the kids liked playing with.
Our highlight in Oklahoma was visiting Oklahoma University. Pat's buddy Phil works in the Athletic Department, so he took us for a walk around campus. We were able to go into the football stadium, which is gigantic! He also took us into his office- his job is coordinating all of the "spirit" activities, so we got to see pics of the mascots, some championship rings, and a shotgun the "Ruf Neks" shoot off during games.
After Oklahoma City, we continued west to Amarillo Texas. Again, most of our time was spent doing school, but we did 2 fun things while we were in town. First, we visited Cadillac Ranch. Cadillac Ranch is an interactive art installation- it's 10 Cadillacs buried nose down in the middle of a field on the side of the old Rt 66. Visitors are encouraged to bring spray paint and add graffiti to the cars. The kids LOVED this. After the used up all the spray paint we brought, the walked around and kept finding half used bottles and adding more art. It was really neat and I'm glad we stopped by.
After Cadillac Ranch, we headed back to our campground to wait for our complementary Limo Ride to the Big Texan Steak House: Home of the 72oz Free Steak (**if you eat the whole steak and all sides in 60 minutes, ugh gross--- though I was sad no one took the challenge while we were there). The steak was really good, and the atmosphere was fun. The kids even got free cowboy hats with their meals. We went a little early, which was good because by the time we were leaving the lobby was packed full of non-masked Texans. ::sigh::
A little swimming in the indoor heated pool rounded out our stay in Amarillo. Next up: Carlsbad, NM, then just one more stop until Tucson.
